A lot of Calgary parents begin by opening a map and asking what is closest. That is a fair starting point, but it is not enough. A daycare location should work not only on a normal day, but also on days with heavy traffic, winter gear, schedule changes, or multiple pickups.
When near-home daycare is usually strongest
A home-based location can make mornings and evenings feel simpler, especially if one parent handles most drop-offs and pickups or if the family wants less total driving in a week.
When near-work or commute-route daycare may be better
Some families prefer child care near the route they already drive every day. That can make sense when work commutes are predictable and the location lets parents combine travel with a straightforward tour, pickup, or backup plan.
- Test the route during the real times you would travel
- Ask whether the centre fits your earliest and latest realistic timing
- Think about who can help if work schedules change suddenly
Use the tour to test more than the room
When you visit, pay attention to the full experience: parking, entry, transition time, and whether the location still feels manageable when you imagine doing it several days a week. That is often where the better decision becomes obvious.
